Lauren Morris

Put yourself out there.

That’s one of the takeaways from my conversation with Lauren Morris of AdLib Theatre. A fear of failing, and a perception of failure, kept her off the stage at first. Luckily for us, and as you’ll hear in this episode, that fear was incredibly unfounded.

She attended high school at the normal age for attending high school. During those formative years, she fell in love with improv, but it wasn’t until much later that she returned to it.

There are a lot of ideas for how improv classes and training may help you, but at it’s core, it’s about letting go of fear. I really appreciated the way Lauren describes it, but then again, I’m a sucker for circles.

You can also tell she’s serious about her craft. Along with starting AdLib, she tours, sets up festivals, produces and directs shows, and hosts her own podcast featuring interviews with improv educators from all over.

We found ourselves calling out many people, places, and things during the course of the conversation. Here are some of the nouns we apologized to or invited to call in for clarification:

  • George R.R. Martin
  • Florida and the month of August
  • Zombies
  • Oxford University
  • The listening audience
  • Tom Petty, the Heartbreakers
  • Jason Priestley and St. Augustine
