I always forget to ask questions.

With Chelsea Hilend, someone who received her bachelor degree in Theatre Performance, it’s only natural to want to ask about being on stage. Of course, since she serves as the marketing and box office manager for Annie Russell Theatre, she also sees another side of the house. Just as important and often answering the most challenging question:

How the heck do you get more people to the arts?

Not that Chelsea has the answer, but what I really appreciated about our conversation is that she’s trying to find it. Currently enrolled at the Crummer Graduate School of Business working on her MBA, she has a unique perspective of an actor, an instructor (at SAK), and a marketer.

Orlando has always had this challenge. It’s probably getting better recently – it feels like a cultural renaissance for the area – but you can still see the half full shows in some venues (if you went to more shows, of course).

While we didn’t come up with the solution, I figure if someone will, it will be Chelsea.

2:43 – We play a rousing round of Law or Order! Get to know Chelsea, and a new, confusing game.

8:36 – It’s time for Spider Talk on WPRK. How much do they eat? A lot as it turns out!

20:22 – Chelsea answers the age-old question: If you could be a movie, what movie would it be?

23:45 – An intro to improv, and how Chelsea ended up in theater. Theatre?

30:14 – Getting people to show to the shows is a challenge. Some of the things Chelsea has learned from working on both sides of the stage.

40:06 – Feet fetishists and people with resume gaps. Those are our target markets for Bad Business Ideas™!

51:19 – Musically speaking, what music speaks to Chelsea?

59:00 – Pop quiz, hot shot! Super potatoes, cancelled crayons, and the Raiders all make an appearance.

1:02:50 – It’s a few minutes on education and Chelsea’s MBA aspirations.

1:09:30 – What’s happening at the Annie? Urinetown!
